Gain and Loss

Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they belong to Joss Whedon, the WB, 20th Century Fox, and any other people I forgot to mention.

Author's Notes: This is my first fan fiction story! This is a Buffy/Spike relationship.

Buffy was walking around the graveyard, bored.  The night was young, but there had been little action.  Scratch that, no action.  None what so ever.  She was about to just give up for the night.  But then, she heard a bush rustling.  She whipped around to find no one.  She turned cautiously back, and she heard it again.

"Okay, what's the deal?" she said, annoyed.  Spike came out smiling.

"Hello love," he said.

"Damn it Spike!  You scared me!" she said, laughing, relieved that it was just him.  She was glad for his company. He had been patrolling with her about every night now, due to his blackmail.  At first it had been awkward, being allies with your enemy, but they had grown more comfortable with each other as the nights passed.

"That's was exactly my point," Spike said pointedly.

"So, what have you been doing tonight?" Buffy asked.

"Grabbing a snack," Spike answered.

"Spike...." Buffy warned.

"There was no killing!  I swear on my undead life," Spike said defensively.

"Okay," Buffy relented.  She looked at Spike.  He was really cute and sexy.  And she had grown to know a new side to him.  He was no longer the killing and maiming demon he was, due to a hefty dose of blackmail, and he was forced into helping them.  But as the time passed, he grew more fond of Buffy and the crew, especially Buffy, who he would help slay nightly.  They've even shared a kiss here or there, but they didn't really talk about it later.  Both were embarassed.

"So, love.  What's going on tonight?" Spike asked.

"Nothing!  There is absolutely nothing!  No vampires, no demons, no evil!  It's a peaceful night, like Halloween!  I hate Halloween!  It's boring!" Buffy complained.  Spike took her in his arms.

"Shh, love, it's all right.  I can think of some things that could liven this night up," he grinned mischieveoulsy. He wanted nothing more than to sleep with her.  It's been like that for a while, and he'd joke about it, but at sometime, he'd like to take his jokes to action.

"Is that a hint?" Buffy asked with a pointed look as she left his arms.

"What do you think, Slayer?" Spike asked.  Buffy's face turned red, and she decided to change the subject.

"So, did you know Angel was in town?" she asked, looking sad.

"What's that wanker doing here?" he yelled.  He didn't want his sire coming and interfering with him and his non existent relationship with Buffy.

"Relax Spike.  He's here to fight demons, get a break from L.A.&nsbp; Guess where he's staying?"

"I really don't want to know," Spike grumbled.

"At my place!  Can you believe it!  I mean, after he just left me, he thinks he can come waltzing back, and bunking up with me like we're friends!" Buffy ranted.

"You could've said no, pet," Spike told her, rolling his eyes.&nsbp; He had heard Buffy rant about Angel before, he was used to it.  But never had Angel actually been in town.

"Well, what else could he do?  Sleep on the streets, and be able to fit into an ash tray later?" Buffy asked.

"You still like him," Spike said in a sing-song voice.

"I do not!" Buffy said, appalled.  "I've been over him a while now!" she said in a huff.

"Prove it," Spike said.

"What?!"

"You heard me.  Prove that you are over the big poof."

Buffy pondered a moment and thought of a way to prove Spike wrong.  Suddenly, on impulse, she grabbed Spike, and kissed him, full of built up of passion.

Spike was shocked at first, but reacted quickly, and kissed her back, with all of his heart.  They finally pulled away breathlessly.

"Well proven," Spike said, applauding her.  "Like to do it again?" they both laughed.

"Slayer-"

"Spike-"  They laughed.  "You first," said Buffy.

"Slayer, that was one hell of a kiss," he said appreciatevly.

Buffy smiled.&nsbp; "Thanks.  You're sweet. Wanna try again?" he laughed, and they leaned in and kissed each other again.

Then, as they both withdrew, Buffy smiled at Spike.

"I never thought I'd be kissing a vampire again."

Spike smiled back at her.  "Get used to it," and he kissed her again.  They continued for a few moments, then Buffy pulled away.

"Spike?  What are we?" she asked.

"A messed up demon, and a screwed up Slayer," he answered sarcastically.

Buffy laughed.  "Seriously, though. I mean, are we just partners who kiss occasionally, or what?"

"Well, what do you want us to be?" Spike was bored. He didn't want to talk, he wanted to take action.

Buffy smiled.  "I don't care," and she kissed him again.  This time, they pulled away panting, breathlessly, and both dying for more.

"My place- now," said Buffy breathlessly.

Hours later, Spike woke up, after his night with Buffy. He saw she was still asleep, and he watched her, putting his arms around her.  After a while she woke up.

Buffy was surprised.  This was the first time she slept with someone who she woke up with.  She smiled, and leaned against Spike's chest.

"Morning love," Spike purred.

"Hi, Spike," she said sleepily.

They laid together, in each other's arms.  Then, Spike broke the silence.&nsbp; "Pet, I'm hungry."

"Me too!" laughed Buffy.  At the same time, they leaned in and kissed each other.  Their make out session, stopped when they heard footsteps outside Buffy's door.

"Quick, hide!" ordered Buffy.  She shoved Spike under the bed.  The door knocked.  "Come in," she said cheerily.  It was Angel.

"Buffy.  Willow's here," Angel said, oblivious to his child under the bed, who just happened to be making faces at him.

"Willow's here!  God, what time is it?  She wasn't supposed to come until noon!" said Buffy.

"It's 12:30," Angel said, smiling slightly.  "Out late last night?"

"Uh, yeah.  Lots of vampires.  Bad ones. I had to kill them." she lied.

"Are you okay," Angel asked concerned.

"Oh, I'm perfectly fine," Buffy said with a sly smile, that Angel missed.

"That's good.  Bye." Angel left, and Spike crawled out from under the bed.

"Out late last night, are you okay," Spike mimicked Angel. "The only reason I care, is cause I get free rent!"

Buffy burst out laughing.  "Spike!&nsbp; You know that's not true!" she said, as she got dressed.

"Whatever you say ducks." Spike said, obviously showing he didn't agree.

"Well, I gotta go.  But I'll see you tonight?" Buffy asked hopefully.

"I'm not going anywhere love, the sun," Spike said.

"Oh, that's right.  Well don't worry. We'll have fun tonight," Buffy said mischieveously.

"You know it," said Spike.  He kissed Buffy goodbye, and she went down to meet her friend.

***

"Slayer, this does not exactly equal my definition of fun!" Spike complained.

"Come on Spike.  I wanted to see this movie," Buffy whined.

"It's a bloody chick flick!" Spike said.  Buffy pouted.  "Fine, we'll watch it, but you have to make up for it later," Spike told her.  Buffy jumped up and down, like a little kid. They laughed.

"Yea!  Okay, I'll get the popcorn, but you buy the tickets," she said.  "Do you like butter? Oh, you probably don't eat popcorn!"

"Get extra butter," Spike said.  "I like some human food, I just don't need to eat, but I can if I want.  For example, I love those little marshmellows."

"Me too!  In hot chocolate!  Those are the best!" Buffy exclaimed.

Spike smiled.  "Looks like we have more in common than we thought Slayer." Buffy smiled, and kissed him.

They went into the movie together, but both of them were so distracted by the other, they didn't even know what happened.  Not that it mattered to Spike.&nsbp; He was eager for a replay of what happened last night.  Finally, the movie was over, and they headed to Buffy's place.

"Spike, did you enjoy the movie?" Buffy asked.

"I enjoyed being with you," Spike answered. Buffy smiled.

"Spike, when did you become so sweet?"

"I'm not sweet.  I'm a big mean evil vampire."

"Yes.  You're so evil.  Face it Spike, you're as good as Angel now.&nsbp; Better, considering you don't have a soul.  And don't ever get one."

"That is so not on my agenda," Spike laughed.

"Good.  I can't handle having another souled vampire lover."

"So, what does the old poof do all night," Spike changed the subject.  He didn't want Angel to come in on them.

"Oh, I don't know.  He's very cryptic about it." Buffy said.

"Well, when does he usually get back," asked Spike.

"Not for a while," Buffy smiled.  Spike smiled back, and kissed her, a marshmellowy, gooey kiss.

And as the weeks passed, their relationship continued to flourish, everyday becoming better than the other. They never told any of her friends, not even Willow. They didn't trust him, and didn't even like it that he would help Buffy on patrol once in a while.  Spike began to tell Buffy about his past, and Buffy would confide in him about her life, her worries, and everything.  It was not just a relationship based on sex, but on trust, and love, though neither said it.  Until the day after Buffy's birthday.

She and Spike celebrated the day after, for she had celebrated with Willow, Xander, Oz, and Anya the exact day of her birthday.  Then the next night, it was just her and Spike.  He had treated her to a dinner, cooked by him.&nsbp; Then they slept together, and when she woke up, her blue eyes met his.

"Buffy, I love you," Spike said.  He hadn't loved anyone since Druscilla, but now he loved Buffy with all of his undead heart.

Buffy melted.  She had waited to hear those words forever.  And he had called her Buffy, not Slayer.  This was the first time ever. "I love you..... William?" she didn't know what to call him.  "What were you called before you were changed?"

Spike thought for a moment.  "I was called William, or Willy but I hated that.  Oh, my sister, Maria, remember?  I told you about her," Buffy nodded.&nsbp; "Well, she called me Will.  I always loved that." Spike smiled wistfully.  "No one else has ever called me Will."

"Well, Will, I love you," Buffy smiled, and he kissed her with all the passion he had.  Then, the door opened.

It was Angel.  He looked at the two entangled bodies in shock.

"F**k," cursed Spike.  He didn't know what his sire's reaction would be, and he really didn't want to know.

Buffy was angry at Angel.  He had ruined her and Spike's perfect moment.

"Spike, get out," he said without emotion.

"No, Spike stay.  Angel, you get out!" Buffy told him.

"Spike, there is about an hour before the sun comes up. Go home." Angel said, ignoring Buffy.

"But-" Spike was cut off.

"Now!" Angel ordered.  Spike looked at Buffy, who was crying.  She nodded, and told him he should go.  He cursed and put his clothes on, and left, glaring at Angel.

"Buffy, he's dangerous," Angel said.

"No he's not!  We love each other!" Buffy was crying uncontrollably.

"Spike is incapable of love.  He's a demon, a soulless one." Angel told her.

"He is too capable of love!  He loves me, and he loved Druscilla!  You don't know anything about him!" Buffy told him wildly.  She no longer had control of what she said, just whatever came out.

"Buffy, I know you don't want to hear this, but it's an act.  He's using you, getting close to you, so killing you won't be a problem," Angel said. He still loved Buffy, and didn't trust Spike at all.

"Get out!  Stop saying mean things! Get out!" Buffy yelled.

"Buffy, don't be irrational-"

"Get out!!" Buffy had thrown a vile of holy water at him. He screamed in agony, and ran out.  Buffy flopped on her bed, and kept crying, for her love.

After Angel had recovered from his holy water attack, he called Willow, Xander, Anya, and Oz.  He told them he would meet them at Willow's house.  He went by the tunnels, and when he got there, they were there, with worried expressions on their faces.

"What's the matter Angel?" Willow asked.  Angel told them about Buffy and Spike, and expressions of worry, soon changed to horror, disgust, and shock.

"So, what do we do?" Xander asked.  "Kill him?" Angel shook his head.

"Killing him would not be the wise choice." he said. "Buffy would be right by his side, fighting with him."

"So, what do we do?" Willow asked.  Angel pulled out something from his duster.  It was the Orb of Thessula.

"We restore his soul," he said plainly.

"When?" Anya asked.

"Right now," answered Angel.  "Willow do you remember how to do this?"  She nodded. "Then let's get started.

A few minutes later, Spike's eyes glowed and a ripping pain came through him.  Then, he was gone. He now had his soul.

***

William was trudging through the snow, on his way to meet his finacee, Anna.  He had proposed to her two weeks before.  Now, they were going to plan their wedding.

As William was walking, he could feel someone watching him.&nbp; He whipped around, but saw no one.  He shrugged it off as nervousness, and kept walking. But the feeling didn't go away.  Then, he bumped into someone.

"Bloody hell," he muttered.  "Why don't you watch where you're going!" he shouted. The man smirked at him.

"Where are you heading?" he asked.

"None of your business," William shouted back.

"Aye, but it is my business," the man told him. He slipped into his vampire face.

Surprisingly, William didn't scream, or run. He stood there, and took out his knife he'd been carrying, to defend himself against the man.

The man grabbed William, and he sunk the knife into his arm.  The man growled, and released William. Then, he punched William, with all his strength. William slumped to the ground, blood spurting from his mouth.  The man grabbed the knife from William, and threw it down the alley.  Then, he leaned down to bite William.  Again, he recoiled in pain.  He looked down, and saw William had a cross in his hand.

Ignoring the pain, the man grabbed the cross and threw it down the alley.  Then, he sank his fangs into William, but did not take all the blood.  Instead, he cut himself and fed blood to William, who took it gladly.

Angelus had not planned on changing William. But, he proved himself to be a good fighter, and he was worthy in Angelus's eyes.  So, he sired him.  Then, he took William, and brought him back to his place.  Then, he woke up, and that's when it had all begun.

***

William remembered everything.  He remembered killing Anna, his family torturing the Slayers, and the infinite number of people he killed.  The doorbell rang.

"What!" he shouted.

Willow opened the door, and was followed by Xander, Anya, and Oz.  They saw his tear-stained face.

"What happened?" he asked hoarsely.

"You have your soul back," Willow said.

"Oh god. What have I done?" wailed Spike.

"Many bad things which you will be punished for," Anya said.

With that, Spike knew his future was bleak. He would be tortured forever from visions from his past. And as Willow told him about the happiness clause, his stomach sank.&nsbp; It looked very bleak.

Then, after Willow had told him everything he needed to know, they left.  They told him to go to Buffy's house, to meet them there.  He knew about the demon and her past, and he wondered what was in the future.

***

Spike had stood outside Buffy's house, waiting for the other's to show up first.  Then, he saw a tall, dark man. He recollected him memories, and recognized him as Angel.

"Hello, Spike," Angel said.

"William," Spike said.

"Okay, William.  The other's aren't showing up. You remember Buffy don't you?"  Spike nodded. He remembered her.

"What are your feelings for her?" Angel asked out of curiousity.

Spike thought about that for a moment. "I know that the demon in me loved her, but I can't say that for me.&nsbp; I don't even know her.  And my heart belongs forever to Anna."

"Anna?" Angel asked.

"My financee.&nsbp; I was to marry her a week before you changed me," Spike told him.  Angel closed his eyes.&nsbp; Another guilt laid upon his soul.

"Are you ready for this?" Angel asked, trying to forget his sins.

Spike nodded, and Angel rapped on the door. Buffy answered, her eyes blood shot and puffy.

"Spike!" she said brightening up.  Spike shook his head.

"No."

Buffy was confused, but she knew in her subconscious what happened.  But she refused to believe it. "Excuse me?" she asked dreading the answer.

Spike's eyes were filled with pain.  "I got my soul back."

Even though Buffy probably knew that's what happened, she was shocked anyway.  "No-" she whispered.

"I'm sorry Buffy," Angel said.  "But this was the best way."

"For who?  For you?  Cause it's not for Spike, and certainly not best for me!"  Buffy yelled angry at the loss of her lover. "Do you remember us?" she asked Spike.

Spike nodded. "Yes, I do."

"Do you feel anything for me?" she asked hopefully.

Spike shook his head.&nsbp; "I don't know Buffy. I'm all confused right now."

"Buffy, I think we should go," Angel said, taking Spike. "See you around."

"Good bye Buffy," Spike said.  Buffy just cried as her lover left.

And as Angel and Spike walked back to Spike's house, Angel did his best thing to do for redemption. He took a stake, and staked Spike, ending the emotional pain for him.  And Spike faded into the darkness again.  This time, forever.  He could now be with Anna for eternity.

Buffy didn't care anything for his new Spike, this intruder.  He didn't like marshmellows, he didn't call her pet, or love.  He called her Buffy whenever, not knowing the specialness of what it was when Spike first called her Buffy.

Ironic, she lost Angel when he lost his soul for the first time.  And she lost Spike when he gained his soul. Her two vampire lovers, both were snatched away in seconds, without a care in the world.

She had loved Spike, loved him with all her heart. He wasn't a replacement for Angel.  He was hers. And she had lost him, not by either one of them's choice.  Angel had interfered, like Spike had predicted. God, she missed Spike.

She had loved him.  And she had lost.
