Part 4

Giles sat alone in his apartment nursing a hot cup of tea.  He watched the night sky with a solemn face.  All about him on the floor were his diaries, his Watcher's Diaries.  Some were his own, others previous Watchers.  Giles had seen much bloodshed during his tenure in the war against the darkness, and he had always believed that he would never surrender to evil.  But if Cordelia's words were true, he had succumbed to his enemies and betrayed those he loved.  Giles knew the girl's words were true he just could not understand how and why.  It didn't matter.  All that mattered was tomorrow he would become a traitor.

Giles shifted his weight in the chair and a gun became visible in his left hand.  *Never would I have thought of taking my own life*, Giles thought to himself, but the sad reality of betrayal had brought about options once never dreamed possible.  In his right hand, Giles held on to a letter.  It was short, but said what he wanted it to:

Sorry Buffy, but I could not allow myself to betray you.
                         Love Always, Giles

There were no tears in his eyes.  He thought that this near to death he would be consumed by grief, but he wasn't.  There was satisfaction in knowing that he was doing the right thing, for Buffy, for Cordelia, for the world.  He smiled as he raised the gun.

"Rupert Giles."  The voice was cold and sinister, echoing upon itself with a terrifying rumble.  It was Kronos the Corrupter.

Giles turned to see a mist of darkness, a cloud of black enveloping all light around.  He froze momentarily, and then he raised the gun quickly.  But the slight hesitation was all the demon needed.  The cloud surrounded the Watcher and entered his body taking control.  Giles' dropped to his knees, his head down.  When he looked up, the eyes were evil and the smile devious.  He glanced at the gun and sent it smashing through the wall.

"The end is here.  It all begins now." Giles laughed, and it was not the Watcher's laugh, but the howl of a demon.  Kronos' evil laugh broke the silence of the night, as he made his way out of the apartment.  "My little Buffy . . .here I come."
