Prologue

It was a cold February night.  Even along the deserted highways of central California, frost layed on the grass over lapping the painted pavement.  A bus pulled up to a gas station where the driver stopped to get a coffee from the small bar.  After he came back out, he saw a girl, around her early teens, inspecting the front of the bus, two large bags sitting on the ground behind her.

"Can I help you, miss?" the old man asked, stumbling towards her with a coffee cup in his hand.

"Uh...yeah.  Where does this bus go?" she replied inquiringly.

"Sunnydale, oh...say...1-2 hours away."

"Okay.  Great!" she smiled, stuffing her bags into the opened luggage compartment, handing him her ticket and stepping on board.  In the light of the large vehicle, the driver could see she had shoulder-length, thick dark blonde hair tucked underneath a black wool winter cap.  Her jacket was a black ski jacket with a purple and lime green strip across the front.  She was wearing a dirty, dark pair of jeans and shoes that looked like they'd been purchased long ago.

The girl walked down the aisle and sat down in one of the plush seats on the left side, across from someone.  She looked at the person closely: Male, around 20, dark hair and wearing a leather jacket.  He had his head down and his arms around his neck, as if protecting it.  On his left hand, she saw a small silver ring, with a heart surrounded by hands and a crown.  He suddenly looked up, sensing someone.  Their eyes made contact for a second, her blue and his brown, then she pulled away.

Oh man...Cutey at 4:00... she thought as the driver stepped back on board and started the bus again.  Then they were off, back on the highway headed south.  A few minutes past before the old man spoke up.

"So...Why ya headed to Sunnydale, little lady?"

"I...have family there." the girl replied unsuringly.

The driver chuckled softly through his thick white beard, then told her, "You know, it's said to be inhabited by vampires!"

"There's no such thing as vampires!" the girl shot back.

"You have no idea..." the young man to her right whispered, barely audible.

"Huh?" But the man didn't reply.  He just looked out the window at the darkened scenery, silence gripping his tonuge again.  He appeared, from the girl's angle, to be troubled in somesort of way.  She then deverted her attention to the nearing sign through his window.

As the bus spend into the night towards it's destination, the sign flew past, reading: SUNNYDALE 100 miles.
